Psychedelic Medicine

WHAT ARE PSYCHEDELICS?

Psychedelics are a specific category of drugs known for their psychoactive effects and increasingly for their potential therapeutic benefits. They encompass various plants and fungi, as well as synthetic compounds.

What is psychedelic assisted therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is a form of therapy that involves the use of psychedelic medicines such as psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine, among others, to facilitate mental wellness, therapeutic breakthroughs, and insight.

While still largely restricted to research settings, psychedelic-assisted therapy is a broad term that encompasses a number of different approaches and protocols using psychedelic medicines, and involves protocols and practices that have been studied since the 1950s. Though psychedelics like LSD showed promise as therapeutic agents in those early years, a period of prohibition starting in the 1960s and through the early 2000s significantly hindered the research and development of these modalities.

The last decade has seen a significant body of encouraging research supporting the efficacy of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for a number of mental health issues, especially depression, anxiety, addiction, and trauma. Although all psychedelics are regulated substances, the legal and medical landscape is changing quickly, and some treatment options are available.

How does it work?

Psychedelics, when combined with therapy, can work on both a chemical and emotional level to help people address mental health struggles.

On a chemical level, psychedelics work to increase neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections and pathways, which may expand the capacity for healing by encouraging the development of new thought patterns and/or increasing self-empathy. This can be a helpful supplement to the treatment of mental health symptoms through therapy.

On an emotional level, psychedelics can help us reconnect with our emotions, and revisit past traumas, stress and other difficult experiences from a safe and supported places. This allows us to reframe and process these experiences, reducing their negative impact on our daily lives.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?

While psychedelics offer a promising treatment option for certain mental health conditions, more research is required and they are not for everyone. Psychedelic medications have contraindications and their use has serious risks and may cause serious side effects. Always consult a physician before starting or stopping any medication or other treatment.

  • My depression had a familiar pattern; new antidepressant , a couple of years of effective treatment, then a plateau that felt mind numbing and ineffective. Switching to a new medication felt like throwing darts at a dart board and after 20 years of treatment I was extremely tired of this process. Numerous attempts at no antidepressants resulted in suicidal ideation within six months, then the antidepressants were started again and the pattern continued.

When I decided to try Ketamine therapy I had no idea what I was signing up for, I just knew I was tired of the same antidepressant experience and that if ketamine helped great, and if it didn’t , well at least I’d tried.

The entire process from the initial intake meeting, to the treatments themselves, to the integration therapy sessions, were all conducted with thoughtful, caring professionalism in a soothing and safe environment that allowed me to step into an unknown world without any qualms. The protocols and team Dr Allen has put in place insure a medically and physically safe ketamine experience.

Ketamine is a journey of self discovery and with the right integration therapist and a willingness to participate in my own healing it proved to be an insightful tool in my depression treatment. I felt “unstuck”, I felt less depressed, I felt hopeful.

I have experienced insights and changes in my mental health in the past year that I know are a direct result of my ketamine journey. I am looking forward to experiencing another session in the future and continuing on this path of self discovery and lifted depression symptoms. I highly recommend trying ketamine at NeuroSpa to help in your depression treatment program.
